South Asian Bar Association of Greater Boston

What we do

Programs

Year-round programs that serve attorneys, law students, and the wider South Asian community in Greater Boston.

SABA GB provides programs and services to the legal profession and to the broader South Asian community. Mentorship, the Public Interest Fellowship, Know Your Rights!, and bi-weekly job postings are all free and open — members and non-members alike.

KYR

Know Your Rights!

Community legal education since 2010 — winner of SABA NA's Outstanding Program Award.

To fulfill its mission of community service, SABA GB created the Know Your Rights! (KYR) program in 2010. South Asian community leaders attend twelve two-hour sessions on topics ranging from employment law and consumer protection to civil rights and racial profiling, the court system and legislative process, family law and domestic violence, immigration, Social Security and disability law, Medicaid, and elder care. The program culminates in an annual graduation ceremony.

Graduates leave equipped with information and contacts to share back with their communities across New England. The program has been recognised by SABA NA’s Outstanding Program Award (2011), a SABA NA Foundation Grant (2015), and various media outlets. Former SABA GB President Manisha Bhatt received the John G. Brooks Legal Services Award from the Boston Bar Association for founding the KYR program and for her work at Greater Boston Legal Services.

KYR has expanded to include quarterly community newsletters featuring upcoming events and KYR article submissions, plus community-based Q&A open forums where members can interact with experts across the legal, academic, and non-profit sectors.

Community partners: Saheli, Gurjar, India Circle of Caring, Chinmaya Mission, Aavkar, American India Foundation, Lokvani, the Islamic Center of Boston in Wayland, the India Association of Greater Boston, and Next Generation Foundation.
